Facebook Error- Database Write Failed

Update 02/08/2012: The Facebook error explained below seems to be occurring again. Facebook has been rolling out some updates to the photo viewer which may be contributing to the problem.

Original Facebook Error:

Facebook seems to be very buggy this morning. I’ve been receiving multiple errors while liking posts. This is a list of the error messages people have been receiving:

Facebook Database Write Failed

“Database Write Failed- An error occurred while writing to our database. Please try again later”

“Unable to hide minifeed story”

The first error message is appearing when trying to “like” certain status updates.

I’ve also experienced some errors with our company website. The like buttons are not properly displaying the number of likes for the given article – crisis I know! If I run the page’s URL through the Facebook Debugger it shows the proper number of likes for that page.

After doing some research, I’ve also discovered that many people were unable to access Facebook at all last night. Apparently Facebook was down for “server maintenance”.

A friend of mine brought it to my attention that Facebook has been changing around the chat interface for a couple days now. Maybe that has something to do with the database errors as well.

I find it interesting that these errors are occurring only a day after Anonymous announced they will attempt to destroy Facebook on November 5, 2011.

As soon as I find out some information regarding Facebook’s bugginess, I will update this post. If you have more information on the situation please let me know in the comments section!

Solutions:

Unfortunately no fail proof solutions have been found up to this point. I would recommend refreshing the page a few times and if that does not work, log out of your Facebook profile, clear your browser’s cache and log back in to Facebook.

As I discover additional solutions, I will post them here so if you continue to experience problems, check back later and hopefully I will have a more permanent fix for ya!

Facebook New Photo Viewer 2012

GA_googleFillSlot("InPostSquare");

More and more Facebook users have been receiving an update to their Facebook photo experience with a new photo viewer in the last week.

As you can see in the image above, the new Facebook photo viewer includes a sidebar on the right side that contains comments, likes and other social interactions that are associated with the particular photo.

Not all users have received the photo viewer (it was activated for me today) but you can be sure that the feature will be rolled out to all Facebook users within the next couple weeks.

Users of Google+ have noted that the updated Facebook photo viewer is strikingly similar to the photo viewer embedded within Google’s social network released this summer.

Ironically, after the release of Google+, Facebook made a slew of privacy management changes to reflect the best features of Google+ that were not previously included in Facebook.

It is very interesting to see the battle of the social networks continue to heat up. It will be hard to stop Facebook, who has over 800 million current users – especially if they continue to take the best features of other social platforms and implement them in their own system.

So far, the user reactions to the new Facebook photo viewer are mixed but, as with most Facebook changes, it is probably here to stay so you might as well get used to it.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the most recent of Facebook updates in the comments section below!

Facebook Loading Slow 2012

Waiting for Facebook Loading Slow

GA_googleFillSlot("InPostSquare");

Update 02/07/2012: Facebook has been rolling out a new photo viewer over the last week that may be contributing to the “slowness” of Facebook lately.

Regardless, the issue seems to be less widespread for the time being – any further developments will be added to this article.

Please inform me through the comments section below if you think the Facebook slowness issue has resurfaced.

Facebook Loading Problem:

As many of you have probably noticed, there seems to be a problem with slowness on Facebook today.

The problem is evident when both using Facebook itself or accessing a site that interfaces with Facebook’s API – any site on the web with a Facebook like button.

I have noticed on multiple pages not affiliated with Facebook, that they will not finish loading and instead, continue to display a “waiting for www.facebook.com” message in the page load status indicator at the bottom of my browser.

This problem has also been verified by some of my colleagues.

It is one thing for Facebook to be slow or have issues when a user is actually using the Facebook.com domain. It is another thing when almost every page on the internet is having trouble loading completely because it is hooked up to the Facebook API.

I will be keeping an eye on this issue throughout the day and updating this post when more information is available.

If you have any details on the issue, please leave them in the comments section below.

It would be great to hear how widespread and severe the Facebook loading issue is.
